The Upshift
The Path to Healing and Evolution on Planet Earth
By Ervin Laszlo
BOOKWORMS: Just like those sticky musical “ear worms” that keep playing in your head, my Bookworms are the standout, thought-provoking, belief-busting, awareness-shifting reads that stick with me the most. When it comes to shining new light on the way we view life, the world, and ourselves, these are the ones I recommend first.
About The Book
“Be The Change You Want to See”
Climate change, the pandemic, the refugee crisis, poverty, conflict, and violence—it’s hard to imagine there could be a positive side to these converging global crises. But world-renowned Hungarian philosopher, science systems theorist, and integral theorist Ervin László is adamant that all these worrying events do have an unsuspected silver lining: They bring us to a tipping point where we can choose our destiny.
“Be the change that you want to see” is a popular phrase that is often mistakenly credited to Mahatma Ghandi… Regardless of who said it first, there’s no denying either the wisdom or the truth of this exhortation. After all, as the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy once said, “the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.”
If ever there was a time when our world needs us to be crazy enough to believe in our ability to change the world, it is right now.
And if ever there was a person who is qualified to help us achieve this, it’s Ervin Laszlo whose latest book The Upshift: The Path to Healing and Evolution on Planet Earth not only lays out a pathway to healing and evolution on planet Earth, but also offers us a detailed guide to “becoming the change” we need to see in the world.
The Upshift explains that there are two paths opening for us today: a path UP to healing and evolution, and a path DOWN to crises and chaos. It shows how we can enter on the upward path and upshift to a better world.
Given what we are facing, this book, for me, is one of the most important books of our time. Because if we don’t become that change, we are failing our children, our species, and our planet.
I don’t often call books, “must-reads,” as I think those words are bandied around too often and too lightly, but for anyone who considers themselves awakened and responsible (and those who aren’t quite there yet), Ervin Laszlo’s The Upshift truly deserves this distinction.
Building a World Beyond War
“We live at a historic turning point. The global crisis from which we are emerging is a unique opportunity: it holds vital lessons for our life and for our future. It makes clear that we are all in the same boat—we are one people with one destiny.
But it also makes clear that our boat is unstable and in urgent need of repair, indeed, of redesign. The pandemic, climate change, poverty, conflict and violence, and the refugee emergency are all global crises that have an unsuspected silver lining- they bring us to a tipping point where we can choose our destiny.”
Ervin Laszlo’s book The Upshift outlines the nature of that crucial point and suggests what each of us, as conscious and responsible human beings, can and must do to choose the right way forward—the way to a future of living and thriving on this small and precious but delicately balanced and vulnerable Planet Earth.
This book brought home to me what thousands of articles, headlines, and commentaries have never quite managed to do—and that is confront me with the bare, unvarnished and profoundly shocking truth of our and our planet’s urgent situation, while also offering me hope, vision, and many practical suggestions and ideas for how every single one of us can become part of the solution by joining The Upshift Movement.
The Upshift Movement is a grass roots-based international and intercultural better-world-promoting initiative dedicated to building a better world. It brings together the group of dedicated people that anthropologist Margaret Mead had in mind when she said never to doubt the power of a small group of people to change the world. It’s fundamental objective is to create the critical mass that makes our emerging from the depth of the crisis the first step toward a better world: the beginning of a true and lasting upshift of humanity.
