My 10 Best
(In no particular order)
Bringers of the Dawn
This book takes me back to my early 20s. My mom was reading it, so I picked it up out of curiosity, and I was immediately fascinated by the way it spoke about the power the human race has and the untapped power within us. I still remember lying in bed reading it and thinking, wow, as humans we are really powerful… but how do we find that inner power? I wanted that power. I wanted to feel powerful. All my life I had lived in fear, constantly afraid of doing things wrong, saying the wrong thing, or not getting life right. This book opened something inside of me because it showed me there had to be more within us than fear and anxiety. It planted the seed that maybe the power I was searching for was already inside me. I simply had to learn how to access it.
The Celestine Prophecy
The Celestine Prophecy opened me up even more to understanding our inner power, especially how we use power with one another and how we manipulate, control, and try to force outcomes. It showed me the shift from living in control to living in flow, and that change alone felt expansive. I loved that this book delivered such deep spiritual insight through fiction, which made it both fun and beautiful to read. It also awakened me to the idea of synchronicities and helped me start noticing how life could move with more ease and grace when I stepped out of constant drama. Instead of pushing and controlling everything, I began to see there was another way to live one where life could guide us if we were willing to pay attention.
Rich Dad, Poor Dad
Rich Dad Poor Dad came into our lives in the late ’90s when my husband and I were struggling with money. We both came from very different financial backgrounds, and by watching our parents we knew they did not have the answers for us. We found this book because we wanted to change our struggles with money, but what it really did was completely open me up to understanding that words have power, and from there I had an inner knowing that thoughts do too. The life-changing piece for me is near the end of the book when Rich Dad shares the idea that if you change your words, you can begin to change your situation, and the best part is, words are free. That message had a huge impact on my life. In that moment I realized I had to stop saying, “I don’t have money.” Right then and there I made a choice to start watching my words because I could feel that the words I spoke were shaping the situation I was living in.
Kryon – The End Times
Kryon Book One: The End Times opened me up to the possibility that there was hope and that we were not going to experience the Armageddon I had feared for so much of my life. In my early childhood, my parents followed the Mormon religion very deeply, and the fear of the end times was planted deep within me. Even though my parents later left the church and no longer believed it, that fear never fully left me. Armageddon felt terrifying to me as a child and created a deep belief that life would end horribly and that I would not live. When I read this book in the 2000s, it gave me a new sense of hope. For the first time, I felt there could be another future besides destruction and fear. It helped me move forward and gave me the courage to keep living, even though part of me still carried the deep fear that we were all going to die.
The Journey Home
The biggest impact The Journey Home had on me was removing my deep lifelong fear of the devil and going to hell. Church didn’t work for me because I felt I was genuinely trying to be a good person, but I couldn’t live inside the limiting beliefs of a religion. I often felt the mindset was “do as I say, not as I do,” and yet I was terrified I would go to hell because I couldn’t follow the church the way I thought I was supposed to. After reading this book, my fear of the devil completely left me. It changed my belief systems and helped me realize there was more to life and that this planet is not simply about good or bad. It is about experiences, and as we raise our vibration, we change the experiences we personally have into more ease and grace.
Awesomism
I found this book because my son was struggling with life, and I was desperately looking for someone who could help me reach him. At the same time, there was a part of me that wanted someone who could see his greatness instead of only seeing what was wrong with him. I found Suzy in 2011, and her influence totally changed my life. This book opened me up to understanding that my feelings, words, thoughts, and actions were all being reflected back to me through my son’s behavior. The little stories throughout the book spoke to me on a much deeper level. They helped me see that we are humans living from the vibrations of emotional experiences that have not been fully felt. Once we begin to transform those inner vibrations, our outer vibration changes too. As I shifted my vibration and moved through my own emotions, it not only changed my son’s behavior, but my other sons’ behavior as well. This book took me in a direction that truly changed my path forward, moving me out of anger and fear and into my truth and authenticity.
The Field
This book took me to a whole new level of understanding. From all the previous books I had read, the common thread around empowerment was consciousness and how it affects everything around us. Our power is our consciousness. Lynne McTaggart’s ability to take such a big concept and put it into terms I could understand was life-changing for me. She helped me understand that our consciousness is powerful, that we are all connected, and that we are far more expansive than we ever thought possible. What I also loved was learning that when people come together and focus on one intention, we can change outcomes not only for ourselves but for each other. I especially loved the science behind this book because Lynne makes these concepts easy for the everyday person to understand.
Dare to Lead
Dare to Lead had the biggest nugget for me around feelings. Brené talks about actually feeling your feelings, and she once timed it and found that it takes about eight seconds for a feeling to begin to diminish when you fully allow yourself to feel it. I was astounded by this because we spend years running away from our feelings instead of taking eight seconds to truly feel them. That one idea gave me the courage to start moving through my feelings instead of avoiding them. For the feelings that are bigger than eight seconds, I get support with the rest, but I still stop and allow myself to feel them first. That simple practice has helped me move through life with more ease and grace.
The Four Agreements
This book changed my life in the way I see myself and others. Living by these four simple awarenesses: do your best, do not take anything personally, don’t assume anything, and be impeccable with your word will automatically begin to change your life. They help you feel empowered while also helping you feel authentic. I find that a lot of times when I am caught up in drama, I am simply not paying attention. When I step back and look at the situation through one of these agreements, I usually realize I am not living by one of them. The simplicity of this book is what makes it so powerful.
Siddhartha
This book was very impactful for me because, at the end of the story, it shows that just because someone is enlightened does not mean they have all the answers for everyone else. Depending on where a person is in their own soul’s journey, it can be difficult for them to accept what you know or understand. That doesn’t make either person bad or wrong, it simply is where they are on their path. Sometimes that can even be true with your own children. This book took me to a whole new level of love, compassion, and understanding. It taught me to have compassion for myself and to forgive myself. At the end of the day, all we can really do is offer love and allowance for where each person is at in their journey and treat them with love, kindness, and respect, even when they believe differently than we do.
