My 10 Best
(In no particular order)
SuperNature
I was a teenager when I read this book and it blew fuses in my mind. It was one of the very first of its kind in terms of being groundbreaking and paradigm-shifting because it looked at the interconnectedness of the universe. It’s something I then wrote about in my first book—blending science with the supernatural. Lyall Watson was the first brave man to do that. He grew up in South Africa, spending a lot time in the bush. As an anthropologist, biologist, and neurologist his whole thesis is around the connection of the universe and science and spirit, paranormal and supernatural manifestations. So if you think of how interconnected we are with the rhythms of the sun and moon that I now work with, that’s my bread and butter on an everyday basis. This book gave that to me as a teenager years before I discovered astrology. I read it over and over. In the book he’s asking, what is the biological basis of consciousness and what defines reality? This really kicked off what remained a major life interest for me.
Wholeness and the Implicate Order
David Bohm was a senior lecturer in theoretical physics at London University but he had a very wide view of the world. He used to have all night conversations with Krishnamurti, the Indian mystic, some of which you can find online. He too is discussing the malleable nature of reality, seeing the connectedness as the Universal Order of Undivided Wholeness. He said there’s a much higher level of being, a pure potentiality, which in a usual rough and tumble day we are not aware of, but which, in fact, can be perceived in the overall mass of our daily life. He shows the underlying order brilliantly to illuminate how life operates. For me, I know this is how astrology really works. There seems a randomness but actually there are whole pillars of meaning, astrologically, that underpin our reality. We can strip away the personalized events and see the amazing underlying pattern that we are operating within.
The Biology of Belief
Before Bruce Lipton’s work and publication in this area, the belief was that the genes determine the health of the body’s cells, the genes were passed through family lineage, and you were victim to your genes. After Bruce’s work and the development of what he called epigenetics—meaning above or genetics—we can all share his epiphany that this is not so. Bruce Lipton discovered that different perceptions have great influence on the integrity of the cell. He discovered how consciousness makes a difference in health and was ostracized from the scientific community in the beginning because it shattered previous and dearly-held ideas. But time has given this work the increased credibility it deserves. His work is very empowering and opens us all to a new world of possibility regarding our body’s health.
The Field
I love Lynne McTaggart’s writing because all her books—though densely scientific and well-evidenced—read like detective stories; we can’t wait to read the next chapter. It’s very hard to challenge her information because she went to experts in the field all over the world, to people who are really investigating breakthrough work in their fields. There are wonderful quotes in the book: “All human beings and all living things coalesce in a field of energy connected to every other thing in the world; the pulsating energy field is the control engine of our being and our consciousness; the zero point field is a kind of shadow of the universe through all time, a mirror image, a record of everything through time; the more coherent your energy the higher the frequency and the brighter your light is.” Though this book was written 15-20 years ago, you can go back to it now and still learn so much, it’s staggering.
The Intention Experiment
In this book, Lynne McTaggart builds on the information in her book, The Field, and takes it to new yet practical lengths, expanding the ideas into much needed areas of life. For instance, she tells of being challenged with reducing violence in the Middle East during a warlike period, and doing so very scientifically within a control group and getting a dramatic and verifiable reduction in violence simply through setting intention and using meditation. This book made me think about how we can actually affect the greater good.
Molecules of Emotion
Candace Pert was an absolute powerhouse—a wonderful, brave lady and an exceptional molecular biologist, quite brilliant. I believe she won the Nobel Prize for this work because it is truly groundbreaking. She really established a new science of psychoneuroimmunology, the linking of the mind and the body. She discovered that each emotion, each feeling such love, joy, hate, etc., has very specific neuropeptides associated with it. Reading this book, one comes to understand the truth, the wonder, and the means of working with the body’s biochemistry instead of being victim to it.
Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself
Hearing Dr. Joe for the first time in the movie, What the Bleep, I was so riveted I went to his very first workshop in London. There were 20 students and now of course he can get 2,000. This book drills right down into the how-to in a way that can be simply and practically applied to change even spinal paralysis by changing the relationship of your thoughts and feelings and their neuropeptides. This book caused massive shifts for me, and what he says aligns so well with my astrology. This book facilitates very big jumps in personal consciousness.
Becoming Supernatural
In this book, Dr Joe Dispenza is teaching us how to shift from 3D thinking and creating to the 5D. He’s teaching us how to reach those higher levels in meditation so we don’t slog through the 3D writing of a business plan, for instance, but go straight to clear intention, set focus, set frequency, and truly shift things instead of develop things.
The Holographic Universe
This is a book from 1991 that I came across later. I was amazed at how Michael Talbot pulls so many things together to form a fascinating view of how things really are. It seemed to pull the many threads of my thinking and growth together and coalesce it for another step forward. His great writing, journalistic excellence, and science interweave to strengthen understanding of how reality is really created and how it can be positively impacted. You come away feeling the difference in you, rather than thinking about it.
The Choice
This last book is completely different and is absolutely gripping. Oprah Winfrey said this book is a reminder of what courage looks like in the worst of times, and that we have the ability to pay attention to what we’ve lost or to pay attention to what we still have. It’s an autobiography by a wonderful lady now in her 90’s. Her strength of spirit just radiates through what is a deeply moving book. It shows the blazing endurance of the human spirit, of our own spirits. It’s really deep, and there’s an incredible humanity in Dr Eger and her view of the horrific events of her life. She’s a rare human being who shows us what we are, in fact, capable of.
