My 10 Best
(In no particular order)
Fourth Uncle in the Mountain
A young orphan discovers his path to becoming a healer. With his physician father they escape from a prison camp, dabbles in the dark arts, finds his way back to the light, and learns what it takes to live in a cave with the enlightened Fourth Uncle in a mountain. An eye opening, true story of a Vietnamese itinerant monk learning tolerance, resilience, and healing. Co-written by the one who lived it, Dr. Quang Van Nguyen.
Mable McKay, Weaving the Dream
A true story of the life of the last Northern California, Pomo Indian healer and “sucking’ doctor, with phenomenal artistry in basket weaving, and her no-nonsense way of an Indian healer’s life. Written by one who was very close to Mable and was the recipient of many of her stories. Follow Mable from her humble upbringing, to becoming one of the great Round House healers of her time. Her stories of chanting, dancing and using her monarch butterfly cocoon rattle in healing ceremonies, sucking a fish out of a person’s eye, and saving lives as taught and told to her by spirit is inspiring and sometimes heartbreaking. Mable is a healer of healer of healers even from the beyond.
The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse
Bringing the heart back into every thought. Charlie Mackesy brings hope, love and community together in this beautiful and poignant compilation of drawings, with thought provoking and humorous captions. You’ll love the little mole with cake on his mind, the fox with few words, the horse with a hidden talent and the boy who is finding his way home, by coming back to himself. With a focus on mental health, written for both adults and children as a relief from suffering loneliness and depression. Each drawing offers grace and thoughtful reflection with just the right amount of humor. I really love this book.
Reality Shifts
My introduction to reality shifts, time changes, and parallel worlds. With eye-opening clarity and first-person observations, Cynthia helps us to shift into openness and ask, “How good can it get?”, with accounts of things disappearing, transforming or transporting, and how focusing on the best possible outcome can bring a reality shift into being. Intention combined with consciousness can affect our past, present and future. Reality shifts can be great fun!
The Sutra of Hui Neng
The extraordinary story of how an illiterate cook became the Buddhist 6th Patriarch, the trials and tribulations of his survival in order to teach the Darma. Hui Neng offers a path towards enlightenment, what that means, and the extraordinary way of how to teach the Darma. The real treat, depending on the translation, is what is written at the end of every discourse, “…and they all became enlightened.” Sign me up!
Autobiography of a Yogi
Apporting food, teleporting jewelry, being in two places at the same time, and visiting rarefied joyous and wise humans. A favorite book of George Harrison and Steve Jobs, this autobiography offers hope of infinite possibilities for overcoming the human condition, takes us to the sacred places of internal Spirituality in the realizations of the miraculous. Showing us what we too can achieve with openness, devotion and dedication. Reminds us of what is possible.
A Guide to Spirit Healing
I’m sorry I was not able to meet Harry Edwards in person. Although he and his healing ministers, when called upon help help me from the other side. In this guide we are offered a set of instructions to help us with our desire to help heal the sick through phases of development. Harry teaches in a very practical manner, that the part we play in loving service to others is simple, and humble. There are first-hand accounts of working both at the sanctuary he established and at a distance with arthritis, cancers and growths, mental conditions, the spine and much more. I come back to this book to read and reread, you may too.
Medicine Buddha Teachings
This book sat on the table for a month before I became interested in perusing its wisdom. I’m not really a practicing Buddhist, but I couldn’t put it down. The Medicine Buddha is said to alleviate all suffering and illness in sentient beings. What was there to lose by learning this meditation from one of the foremost teachers of this healing practice? The first evening I read the long form sutra, a beautiful, humble light being appeared, and just as gently vanished. I have since communicated with this teaching through my dowsing. The vibrational frequency of this book is very supportive for those wanting to explore healing from another perspective. “There is not one second that the Medicine Buddha does not see or have compassion for you.” Lama Zopa Rinpoche
Walking Through Walls, A Memoir
This memoir is written about the fantastical journey of the extraordinary healer named Lew Smith, by his son, artist Philip Smith. It’s the 50’s in Florida, we learn of Lew’s encounters with other worldly beings, his natural healing abilities, being arrested on many occasions for practicing without a medical license and becoming one of the first macrobiotic dieters. Travelling to India to study with remarkable yogis of the time, Philip shares his doubts and misunderstandings about his father’s life path from highly sought-after interior decorator, to the well-known and wealthy, to becoming a healer. There is a reason why the book is titled, Walking Through Walls. Your curiosity will be rewarded.
Start Where You Are
Giving permission to ourselves to start exactly where we are on our spiritual path, relaxes the shoulders a bit. We are human, and there is perfection in the imperfection of being human. Pema’s down to earth, compassionate and humorous style, reminds us that we can continue from where we stand no matter where the path from the past has taken us. We can rediscover our joy and have the courage to “Let go of the handrails”. As a seeker on the healing path, I find Pema’s approach a refreshing reminder to clean and empty my vessel in order to be a free-flowing, loving, light-filled companion on the healing path for others.
