My 10 Best

The Prophet

The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran is a timeless spiritual classic composed of poetic essays that explore the human experience through the wisdom of Almustafa, a prophet preparing to depart the city of Orphalese. As he bids farewell, he offers profound reflections on life’s most essential themes—love, work, freedom, joy, sorrow, and more—speaking with lyrical grace and universal truth. Each chapter reads like a meditation, inviting the reader to contemplate the deeper meaning of existence and the sacredness found in everyday moments. Celebrated for its beauty, simplicity, and insight My grandmother, who was very dear to me, often quoted The Prophet, though I didn’t realize it at the time. I simply remembered the wisdom in her words and how they settled in my soul, offering comfort in the years to come. In high school, after a meaningful conversation, a mentor handed me the book and said, “I think this will serve you.” Twenty years later, I saw the quote “Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. They come through you but not from you,” And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you. hanging in the labor wing waiting room as my mother and I waited for my niece to be born. Another twenty years passed, and in an unrelated moment, my mother reached out to her childhood neighbor, who had lived across the street from the house she grew up in, only to discover that this woman was the first cousin of Kahlil Gibran. The thread of connection, across generations and lifetimes, felt unmistakable.

Man’s Search for Meaning

Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl is a powerful blend of memoir and psychological insight, chronicling his harrowing experiences surviving Nazi concentration camps and introducing his revolutionary approach, logotherapy. In the first part, Frankl shares vivid recollections of daily life in the camps—showing not only unimaginable suffering but also the few who found the inner strength to persevere by clinging to a future purpose. In the second part, he outlines his theory that the primary human drive is not pleasure or power, but the search for meaning, which can be discovered through purposeful work, love, or even suffering approached with dignity . Originally published in German in 1946 under the title Ein Psychologe erlebt das Konzentrationslager (“A Psychologist Experiences the Concentration Camp”) and later released in English in 1959, it has since become one of the most influential books of the twentieth century I was first introduced to Man’s Search for Meaning in college and was immediately struck by the profound power and beauty in the resilience of the human mind and spirit. That core truth never left me. Over the years, I’ve often returned to it, especially during challenging times when I faced a choice point: whether to let someone else’s abuse define who I was, or to rise above and choose a higher path aligned with my own truth. It hasn’t always been easy to choose that path, but Viktor Frankl’s harrowing experience stayed with me. I would often remind myself, “If he could maintain his dignity and purpose in the face of such unimaginable cruelty, then so can I.” I didn’t know at the time that working with the mind would become a core tenet of my own personal development—and eventually the very work I now teach. There is definitely a thread of synchronicity with regard to this work as well.

Embraced By The Light

Embraced by the Light is a deeply moving memoir by Betty J. Eadie that chronicles her near-death experience during a routine hysterectomy at age 31. In a vivid narrative, she describes the sensation of leaving her body, journeying through a mystical tunnel, and being enveloped by a radiant, loving light where she encounters angelic beings and even Jesus Christ. During a panoramic life review, Eadie gains profound insights into the interconnectedness of all lives and the purpose of existence, learning that souls choose their earthly paths before birth and that there are no true accidents—every experience fosters spiritual growth. Ultimately, her return to the physical world transforms her fears of death into a message of hope, love, and divine continuity beyond mortality . I first encountered Embraced by the Light shortly after my beloved grandmother passed on. My mother, sister, and I were struggling with our grief when a close family friend handed us the book. Its message, that our loved ones never truly leave us, and that they continue to surround us with love from a place of peace, resonated deeply. Although this perspective on death differed from our Catholic upbringing, something inside each of us awakened, bringing tremendous relief. We were so moved that we bought multiple copies to share with friends and family who suffered their own losses, hoping it would offer them the same comfort. At the time, I had no idea I was a medium and would later have the privilege of offering comfort and giving evidence to the grieving that our connections endure beyond death. I later went on to meet Beatty Eadie at a synchronistic encounter which allowed me to thank her for sharing her near death experience and for taking the time to write this book . It was a powerful signpost on my spiritual journey.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

This book is the powerful autobiographical memoir by Maya Angelou that recounts her early life growing up Black and female in the segregated American South. The book follows her journey from a troubled and traumatic childhood—marked by abandonment, racism, and abuse—to a young woman discovering her voice, identity, and strength. Through vivid storytelling, Angelou portrays the pain of oppression alongside moments of resilience, dignity, and beauty. Her love of literature, strong will, and the guidance of influential figures help her rise above adversity, making the book a profound testimony to the human spirit’s ability to overcome and transform suffering into empowerment. I’m not exactly sure when I first discovered this book—probably sometime in the mid-1990s—but its impact has unfolded over decades. After spending 30 years helping others uncover their purpose, I now see how deeply this book helped shape my own. On my third read-through, something within me truly awakened. It’s remarkable how the same words can feel brand-new when you’re ready to receive the next layer of wisdom. Looking back, I can see that it served as a powerful signpost in my personal and spiritual development, teaching me to love and value myself so that I could, in turn, help others do the same. We often end up teaching what we came here to learn. I feel privileged to have found Dr. Maya Angelou’s work and to have witnessed her live them as her words and spirit have guided me on my path to forgiveness, resilience, and resurrection.
