Creative Visualization

A true visionary, empath and inspirational being, Shakti’s work taught me how to listen to my inner-knowing, trust in my ability to do anything, and honor my self worth. Her wisdom of how to live as a truly joyful, empowered being, is eternal, and has served as a blueprint for working with the positive energies of imagination and affirmation. I’ve read it many times and I embrace it as a self-improvement bible. This book was my first entrée into spiritual reading, found at a metaphysical book shop in Greenwich Village in the ‘80s.

The Essential Writings of Dr. Edward Bach

That same day, at the same book shop, I picked up this gem. I was immediately enchanted by the idea that one could “Heal Thyself” using the essence of flowers, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I’ve used this profound system to engage emotional wellbeing for decades, for myself as well as for others. I’m grateful for Dr. Bach’s creation of this self-healing tool, and I credit this book as my first awakening to energy medicine healing.

Bach Flower Therapy

Scheffer is a German flower therapy practitioner, and this work is her interpretation of the 38 Bach flower remedies, from a more contemporary psychospiritual exploration. Her words have helped me to expand my awareness of how deeply the remedies affect us at the soul level. I truly appreciate her clarity in defining the healing capacity of each flower, and how we can apply the remedies to our current emotional challenges.

Flowers and Their Messages

“Mother” was the guru-equal to Sri Aurobindo, and she was deeply attuned to the spiritual energy of flowers. She wrote extensively on the subject, and her ideas flow effortlessly as she exalts the luminous qualities that each flower holds. I’m inspired and in awe of her depth of presence, as she writes about her personal relationship with the energies of the natural world. A beautiful reminder that nature indeed heals when we recognize our inherent connection to this universal source of profound medicine.

Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism

I’ve always revered Buddhist studies, and I’ve reflected on the wisdom of Chogyam Trugpa from early on, after reading his translation of The Tibetan Book of the Dead when I was nineteen. I devoured all of his works, and this title stands out as my favorite. The ways in which we deceive ourselves, cling to materialism, and go about life lacking in self-awareness, are elucidated through his unique lens of depth and wit. A must read for anyone who is exploring eastern spirituality from a western viewpoint.

Present Moment Wonderful Moment

As the title suggests, this powerful reminder of present moment peace, has been my mantra for decades. Along with simple affirmative language to support a foundation of mindfulness, artist Mayumi Oda lends the elegant images to this work. “Thay” as his students call him, was a fierce soul, with a gentle demeanor. His writings are clear and compassionate with a voice of stellar reason and deep love. My spiritual practice has been touched deeply by his presence in this world. His body departed this earth in January of 2022, and still, his spirit lives on in every cloud.

Start Where You Are

With candor and vulnerability, Chodron displays her own personal challenging facets in ways that have stayed with me throughout my adult life. She speaks humbly of her life before becoming a monk in ways that make her spiritual teachings more relatable. This book is comforting in its encouragement to treat each moment of each day as precious, and to always begin again, with renewed resilience in the face of challenge. I had the privilege of experiencing a weekend meditation retreat with her about twenty years ago. I recall sitting for a full day in silence with her and hundreds of others, and how the hours passed effortlessly. Her gentle, steadfast approach to spiritual awakening has led me to deeper places within myself.

The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success

This classic, short book outlines seven spiritual precepts to follow for unlimited success. Deepak’s clarity and guidance have encouraged me to live by my divine will and to fearlessly trust in my path, without question. To know that we are all 100% capable of positive outcomes, from the development of our inner experience, is the underpinning of his wisdom. Not only a guidepost for success in all forms, but a treatise in how to live life to the fullest, with certainty and ease.

Goddesses in Every Woman

Bolen is a Jungian analyst and has dedicated her life to the exploration of how feminine archetypes are enlivened in each human. This book was especially enlightening for my spiritual growth, as it allowed me to view my experiences and behaviors as a woman in a new light, free from the weakness’ associated with female stereotypes. Bolen ennobles several ancient mythological goddesses and relates them to various psychological challenges of modern culture. This work was so empowering for me that I have recommended it to many clients and friends who’ve struggled with female disempowerment issues.

The Courage to Heal

This book is the most important collection of women’s experiences of and resources for healing from sexual abuse trauma. Both poets by trade, Bass and Davis weave together the stories of hundreds of women who have survived childhood sexual abuse. I recall picking it up for the first time, flipping through the pages and realizing that these women were like me. That they had lived through horrific abuse, and yet they were each telling their story as if they were whole again. For me, this was the first step in overcoming the shame associated with sexual trauma. The resonance has provided me with comfort and strength throughout the years, which I have gratefully been able to pass on to others. A truly “spiritual” book in its essence of faith, courage, resilience, and recovery.
