My 10 Best

(In no particular order)

Embraced By The Light

This book cracked my heart wide open when I read it in my early 20s. The author’s story of her near-death experience reminded me at a deep level that my life had purpose, and that giving and sharing love is what this adventure called life is all about. It touched me so deeply that I cried deep tears of recognition as I read.

The Road Less Traveled

The promise this book offers, which is that if we can find the courage to examine our fears, insecurities, hopes, and dreams, life can become a richer and more meaningful experience than we can possibly imagine, changed everything for me. I became determined to take the road less traveled in my own life and never looked back. I became an avid seeker of my own truth. Not the truth that my parents or the media or the church I grew up in had told me to believe, but the truth that felt good in my heart. It woke something up in me that was thrilled to be alive.

Succulent Wild Woman

I discovered SARK and Succulent Wild Woman shortly after I moved from Indiana to San Francisco, and almost immediately after my first Burning Man experience in 1997. SARK’s work and way of showing up in the world gave the wild, creative, self-expressed part of myself permission to show up in my daily life and in the world at large in bigger and better ways.

The Dance of the Dissident Daughter

This book inspired me to question and reframe everything I had learned about religion and spirituality at the non-denominational Christian church my family regularly attended while I was growing up. It shined a new light on some of the inconsistencies I had recognized through my own experience and shined a more feminine and expansive perspective on my relationship with the Divine.

Callings

Gregg Levoy’s work has been a guiding light through every aspect of the hero’s journey that began when I dared to say yes to the call to invite the world to skip. From putting my visions into action to traversing the dark night of the soul when a way forward seemed uncertain, Gregg’s work is a constant source of wisdom and inspiration that I return to time and time again.

The Four Agreements

I love the four agreements and the clear and simple guidance they offer for navigating our relationships and lives and have used them as guiding principles for many moons. So much so, that I included them in my vows to my husband when we got married last summer!

The Power of Now

Little did I realize when I first read The Power of Now, that its publisher, New World Library, would become such a central focus in my life six years later! Eckhart’s explanation of the pain body and his guidance around “watching the thinker” helped me recognize ways that my ego had been at play in my life without me even realizing it … and the book did a great deal to take me to the next level of my spiritual awareness and understanding.

Praying Dangerously

I have been a part of a women’s prayer circle called Women Praying Dangerously for over 17 years, where we practice the powerful form of prayer introduced in this book. Instead of praying for the outcome we desire, our prayer is for God’s will to be done so the holy spirit can enter and move freely in our lives, even when our egos might not immediately enjoy the ways it could be confronted in the process.

Excuse Me, Your Life is Waiting

This book does an excellent job teaching the “Law of Attraction”—which I first discovered through audio recordings of Jerry and Esther Hicks—in a clear and accessible way. It deepened my relationship to my body by helping me realize that my feelings are actually an inner guidance system that can guide me to my best life. It also helped me recognize how the positive energy that the joy of skipping infused in my life was working like a magnet to bring me more good things.

The War of Art

Steven Pressfield’s take on resistance as an inherent part of the creative journey offers a powerful way forward toward the realization of our biggest and best creative dreams. I come back to it time and time again when I feel lost or stuck along my creative journey, and I can’t recommend it highly enough.
